After his family is murdered by "the man Jack," a baby ends up in a graveyard where he is adopted by the the Owens' (who are dead), becoming "Bod." Bod has a series of adventures, learns how to read, write, and other skills such as "haunting" and "disapparting." Bod loves his graveyard family but as his guardian, Silas, says, "all the people here have had their lives, Bod, even if they were short ones. Now it's your turn. You need to live." and so he goes off into the world to live and meet people and take it all in. The suspense of the book, and relatable Bod, keep the reader turning the pages for more.
